What makes it special

The easiest snow day from Melbourne

Lake Mountain is Victoria’s premier cross-country and snowplay destination, and the closest snow to Melbourne. There are no downhill chairlifts here — instead you get gentle, groomed Nordic trails, a dedicated toboggan area and wide-open snow for first-timers and families.

Because it’s so close, Lake Mountain is the ideal day trip. Leave the city after breakfast, spend the day in the snow and be home for dinner — no overnight stay required. It sits above the historic timber town of Marysville, so you can pair your snow day with a stop for lunch or coffee on the way home.

Who it suits

First-time snow visitors, families with young kids, couples after a relaxed day, and anyone who wants to build a snowman, toboggan or try cross-country skiing without the crowds and cost of a big alpine resort.

How to get there

Your route to Lake Mountain

Door-to-door in a warm, private vehicle — roughly 2.5 hours each way depending on conditions and where in Melbourne we collect you.

1

Melbourne pickup

We collect you from your home, hotel or office anywhere in metro Melbourne at the time that suits your day — usually an early start to make the most of the snow.

2

Northeast via the Maroondah Highway

We head through the Yarra Valley and Black Spur’s towering forest toward Marysville — one of Victoria’s prettiest drives.

3

Marysville & the alpine road

From Marysville we climb the final stretch to the Lake Mountain plateau. Your driver fits snow chains where conditions require — it’s included.

4

Arrive at the resort

We drop you right at the resort entry. Resort entry is covered in your fare. For same-day trips your driver waits and brings you home that evening.

Good to know

Before you go

Chains & entry sorted

Victorian alpine roads require chains in the declared season. Your chauffeur carries and fits them, and resort entry is included — nothing for you to arrange.

What to bring

Warm waterproof layers, gloves, a beanie and sturdy shoes. Toboggans and cross-country gear can be hired at the resort — we’ll happily fit your own gear too.

No lift passes needed

Lake Mountain is a Nordic resort — there are no downhill chairlifts, so there’s no lift ticket to buy. You pay resort entry (covered) and any gear hire.

Ideal for families

Gentle terrain, a dedicated toboggan run and short distances make this the most stress-free snow option for kids and first-timers.

Questions

Lake Mountain FAQs

How long does it take to drive to Lake Mountain?

Around two and a half hours each way from central Melbourne, depending on traffic, weather and your exact pickup point. It’s the closest snow resort to the city, which makes it the easiest day trip.

Can I visit Lake Mountain just for the day?

Absolutely — it’s the most popular day trip from Melbourne. Choose “same-day return” and your chauffeur stays on the mountain for the day (about 10 hours) and drives you home the same evening.

Is there downhill skiing at Lake Mountain?

No. Lake Mountain is a Nordic resort — it specialises in cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing and snowplay. For downhill runs and chairlifts, Mt Buller is the nearest option.

Do I need to buy a lift pass?

No lift pass is required because there are no chairlifts. You pay resort entry (included in your transfer fare) plus any equipment hire you choose at the resort.

Are snow chains included?

Yes. Your driver carries and fits the correct chains when conditions require — it’s built into your all-inclusive fare, along with resort entry, fuel and tolls.

What should we wear and bring?

Warm, waterproof layers, gloves, a beanie and waterproof shoes or boots. Toboggans and cross-country equipment can be hired on-site; you’re welcome to bring your own and we’ll make room for it.
