What makes it special

The powder capital of Australia

Mount Hotham sits higher than any other alpine village in the country, and that altitude pays off in cold, dry snow that skiers and boarders chase all season. It’s known for steeper, more challenging terrain than the bigger resort towns — a favourite of confident skiers who want a proper alpine adventure.

The village is unusual in that it sits along the ridge at the top of the mountain, so much of it is genuinely ski-in. There’s a relaxed, mountain-town feel, with cosy lodges and restaurants, and the neighbouring village of Dinner Plain adds cross-country trails and a quieter base.

Who it suits

Intermediate-to-advanced skiers and boarders after the best natural snow in Victoria, and anyone who values terrain and conditions over a big party scene. Because it’s a longer drive, it rewards those staying a few days — though same-day trips are possible.

How to get there

Your route to Mount Hotham

About four and a half hours each way along the Great Alpine Road — a scenic but committed drive that we recommend planning around an early start.

1

Melbourne pickup

We collect you anywhere in metro Melbourne. Given the distance, an early departure makes the most of your day on the snow.

2

Northeast to Bright

We travel up the Hume Freeway and into the Ovens Valley, through Wangaratta and the alpine town of Bright.

3

The Great Alpine Road & chains

From Harrietville the road climbs steeply onto the high plains. Your chauffeur fits snow chains where required — it’s included in your fare.

4

Arrive at the village

We drop you in the village along the ridge; resort entry is covered. Many lodges are a short step from the road, much of it ski-in.

Good to know

Before you go

Chains & entry sorted

The alpine climb often requires chains. Your chauffeur carries and fits them, and resort entry is included in your tailored fare.

A longer drive

At ~4.5 hours each way, Hotham suits a multi-day stay, though we can do same-day returns. Tell us your plan in the enquiry and we’ll advise.

Best for confident skiers

Hotham is famous for advanced runs and powder, but there are beginner areas and ski schools too. Lift passes and hire are arranged with the resort.

What to bring

Warm waterproof layers, goggles and sun protection — the altitude means cold, bright conditions. We’ve got room for skis, boards and luggage.

Questions

Mount Hotham FAQs

How long is the drive to Mount Hotham?

Around four and a half hours each way from Melbourne via the Great Alpine Road through Bright and Harrietville. It’s a scenic but committed drive, which is why we tailor each transfer rather than offer a fixed online price.

Why is Hotham enquiry-only instead of instant price?

The longer distance and alpine road mean timing, vehicle and trip style affect the fare more than for the closer resorts. Sending a quick enquiry lets us give you an accurate all-inclusive quote for your exact plan.

Can I still do Hotham as a day trip?

Yes, though it’s a big day given the distance. In the enquiry, choose “same-day return” and tell us your preferred departure times from Melbourne and from the mountain — we’ll build the timing around that.

Is Mount Hotham good for beginners?

Hotham is best known for advanced terrain and powder, but it does have beginner areas, ski schools and the gentler trails around Dinner Plain. Tell us your group’s experience and we’ll advise.

What’s included in the quote?

Your tailored fare is all-inclusive: door-to-door transport, snow chains, resort entry, fuel and tolls, GST included. Lift passes, equipment hire and lessons are arranged separately with the resort.

How quickly will I get a quote?

Usually within the day. We’ll reply by email or WhatsApp with your all-inclusive price and confirm availability for your dates.
